Hurricane Melissa reached Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale and became the most violent Atlantic storm of 2025. With sustained winds of 280 kilometres per hour, it moved slowly over the Caribbean, leaving destruction, torrential rains, and widespread power outages in its wake.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has described it as a “potentially catastrophic” event. Local authorities warn that its passage through Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Bahamas could exceed the damage of any hurricane recorded in the last decade.
