Released in November 2020 alongside the Xbox Series X, the Xbox Series S was positioned as Microsoft’s lower-cost gateway to next-gen gaming. Priced at $299, the smaller, all-digital machine promised feature parity with its more powerful sibling. That meant whatever ran on the Xbox Series X also ran on the Xbox Series S, albeit at a potentially lower resolution and frame rate. It sounded great on paper.

In 2024, however, developers and consumers are growing frustrated with the Xbox Series S’s weaker processing power. As Xbox suffers late-arriving releases (Baldur’s Gate 3) and missing ports (Black Myth: Wukong) due to technical issues, it’s time for Microsoft to abandon game-restraining feature parity…
