A recent field study in Oklahoma has led to a first-of-its-kind discovery in the Western Hemisphere. Scientists detected a toxic industrial pollutant, MCCPs, floating in the air—something never before documented in North America. The unexpected find is now raising fresh concerns about chemical exposure linked to farming practices.
A Hidden Threat in the Air
A research group led by PhD student Daniel Katz from the University of Colorado Boulder was initially measuring how tiny airborne particles form and grow in rural Oklahoma. However, their advanced instruments unexpectedly captured Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs), marking the first-ever detection of these pollutants in the Western Hemisphere’s atmosphere. MCCPs are industrial chemicals commonly used in metalworking fluids, textiles, and PVC construction.
