Water Levels Beneath South Florida Pose a Rising Threat | News World

Thunderstorms, king tides and rising water have all caused devastating flooding in South Florida over the last few years. Climate change is a primary contributor to rising sea levels and intensifying storms. Looking ahead, flood events and their frequency are likely to worsen as the planet continues to warm.

South Florida is preparing, with billions of dollars worth of projects in the works, but there are gaps in the plan. And one of those major gaps is lurking below residents’ feet. Groundwater is rising, and fast.

A Triple Threat

Earlier this year, Broward County completed an eye-opening study that showed the impacts of a triple threat of flooding hazards, namely the combination of rising tides, increasing rain and swelling groundwater levels. When you put these things together, something called compound flooding occurs, and South Florida is at increased risk.
