The Milan-Cortina Winter Games are approaching and bare ground can be seen through Bormio’s downhill ski course. The weather has been too warm to make snow during the day and machines have been running at night to create enough snow. Park City, Utah, the host of the 2034 Winter Olympics, has experienced ‘dismal’ early season snowfall. Warm December weather in both host locations shows climate change will substantially shrink the number of locations able to host.
The Climate and the Games
By 2050, there could be less than 20 countries with the right conditions and infrastructure to host according to a 2024 study. A study published last month examines how to make the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games more climate-resilient.
