There isn’t a fruit that screams fall more than the humble pumpkin. But, as humble as this fall fruit is, it is also not holding anything back when it comes to its growth. Pumpkins are the largest fruit in the world. So, why does this fruit grow until well over 2000 pounds, when other fruits stay so much smaller?
Giant Pumpkins Were Bred That Way
The world record for the largest pumpkin was broken earlier in October 2025, when brothers Patrick and Ian Paton, from the United Kingdom, grew a pumpkin weighing 2,819lbs. It had a circumference of 21 feet.
This is a huge fruit, especially when compared to other fruits. The largest apple ever was just over 4lbs, while the largest strawberry was just over 11 ounces. 4lbs is wildly smaller than 2,819lbs.
