State officials disclosed the seizure Tuesday in a post marking California Ocean Day, describing it as part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal wildlife trade. Prosecutors are now reviewing the case, the agency said.
According to the department, the case began when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received a tip that a private jet departing Hawaii was transporting shark fins. The aircraft left before it could be stopped, officials said, but California wildlife officers stopped it after it landed in the state.
The people on board admitted they had shark fins and consented to a search of the aircraft, the department said. Officers found 40 suspected fins, including dried and frozen specimens, and seized them.
