Vast unknowns still exist in the deep oceans of the Earth, with only about 25% of the ocean floor mapped using conventional methods. These maps rely primarily on direct measurements sonar-driven instruments on sea-faring ships. A more encompassing solution entails utilization of satellite data.
Researchers have been working for decades to refine remote sensing technologies for ocean floor mapping. This, in conjunction with conventional methods, supports the goal of the international scientific community to produce a complete ocean floor map by 2030.
