Most snakes in Massachusetts are relatively harmless.
You leave them alone, and they’ll leave you alone, while keeping your yard’s ecosystem in balance (think fewer rodents).
But, there are two species – just two – that are venomous and their bites would pack a punch: the timber rattlesnake and the copperhead.
Neither of these two species are particularly common to come across, but it does happen. In 2024, for example, two hikers spotted two timber rattlesnakes fighting at Massachusetts’ Blue Hills Reservation.
The good news is for both species the bite is unlikely to be fatal, though does require prompt medical attention.
