This is the first observed evidence of a comet reversing its spin direction, a finding that offers an exceptional glimpse into the physical evolution of these fragile bodies.
The object in question is comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák, known simply as 41P, which likely originated in the Kuiper Belt. From there, and driven by Jupiter’s powerful gravity, it became trapped in an orbit that brings it into the inner solar system every 5.4 years.
