According to the World Health Organization, the world wastes food at an alarming rate. Each year, around one billion tons of edible food are wasted, which is equivalent to one-fifth of all food available to consumers.
In 2026, the chosen theme focuses on an everyday gesture: “Zero waste begins with your plate.”
Around 60% of food waste is generated in households. The rest comes mainly from the restaurant sector and retail trade, as a result of inefficient food systems in production, distribution, and consumption.
