Snowpacks in the west U.S. is a major source of runoff and water supply. The water content of early April snowpack provides estimates and forecasts of eventual total summer overflows. The snowpack that accumulates in the mountains throughout the winter gradually melts in late spring and summer, feeding rivers and reservoirs. However, following a historic snow drought and a warm winter, along with record-breaking March heat, these water supplies are becoming insufficient to meet the needs of communities.
