The Defense Department is expanding hiring flexibilities in an effort to reduce the persistently high unemployment rate among military spouses, which has held steady at around 22% — or about five times the national average.
In a memo to senior Pentagon leadership, combatant commanders and defense agency directors, Anthony Tata, defense under secretary for personnel and readiness, called on the department to make “maximum use” of existing hiring authorities and flexibilities designed to support military spouses.
