An active late-spring weather pattern is unfolding across the United States this week as a slow-moving cold front collides with deep Gulf moisture, triggering repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, and dramatic temperature contrasts from Texas to the Northeast.
The setup is being driven by a powerful upper-level trough ejecting across the Upper Midwest, helping push a sprawling frontal boundary south and east across the Plains and Mississippi Valley. But unlike a fast-moving spring front, this one is expected to slow down and eventually stall, creating the perfect environment for repeated thunderstorm development over some of the same areas through midweek.
