A Fortress Above the Cloud Forest
High in the northern cloud forest, within the Amazonas region, stands the fortress of Kuélap, often wrapped in clouds. This monumental complex, built by the Chachapoya culture that inhabited this area between 800 and 1470 AD, is surrounded by walls that reach up to 20 meters in height. Together, they form a defensive system that evokes medieval castles more than typical pre-Columbian settlements.
