May was an exciting month for stargazers, as the first blue moon in three years will wrap up a busy 31 days of astronomical events. The Eta Aquarids meteor shower put on a show earlier in the month, but more exciting events are on the way for the first month of meteorological summer.
Darkened Skies Illuminate the Cosmos
Nights in June kick off under a nearly-full moon, as the second-full-moon of May occurs on May 31st. As the calendar ticks towards mid-June, though, the next new moon phase arrives on June 15th. In the absence of harsher moonlight, primetime viewing of many fainter, distant stars and galaxies arrives.
