A Korean research team has identified the distribution of gas hydrates in the Arctic over an area two-thirds the size of Seoul. If all of this were released into the atmosphere, it would raise atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations to the level of a disaster, but the deposits are currently expected to remain stable for at least several hundred years.
