The establishment of the Arctic snowpack during the autumn is a rapid affair. At the beginning of September, typically five to ten percent of Arctic lands (excepting the Greenland Ice Sheet) have snow cover, most of that confined to the higher elevations and at low elevations on some land areas north of 75°N.
