During the weekend of October 11th, 2025, a powerful storm hit remote parts of Alaska. This storm flooded villages and displaced over a thousand residents. Due to the area’s remoteness, recovery from this event will likely take years, if it is possible at all.
This event was driven by the remnants of Typhoon Halong, which moved through the extraordinarily warm waters of the northern Pacific towards the Bering Sea. When it hit the Alaskan coast, it was an ex-tropical storm, but it brought a large storm surge, heavy rains, record flooding and hurricane-force winds.
The storm was likely intensified by the water temperatures in the region.
