GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) — A state audit is critical of taxing and spending practices by both the Alachua County and the City of Gainesville governments.
The Florida Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) “Report of Local Government Spending” says rising millage rate and property tax value in Gainesville allowed the city to double tax collections, from $31 million to nearly $63 million from 2017 to 2024.
The Alachua County audit says general fund spending nearly doubled while the population grew 15 percent since 2016.
