The first thing anyone says about Greenland is always the same: why is it called Greenland when there is no green?
The answer is history. The Vikings named it to attract settlers, hoping a promising name would do what the landscape could not. Standing on the island for the first time, looking out at an unbroken expanse of ice stretching to the horizon, the irony of it lands immediately.
This is not green. This is one of the most frozen, remote, and extraordinary places on earth.
