Iceland was, along with Antarctica, the only territory in the world that could boast something unusual: no mosquito had ever colonized its soil. That privilege lasted for centuries. Until October 2025, when a nature enthusiast named Björn Hjaltason set red wine traps in his garden in Kjós, north of the capital, and captured three specimens of the species Culiseta annulata. The discovery was confirmed by entomologist Matthías Alfreðsson, from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, as reported by Agencia SINC. It is not a species that transmits serious diseases to humans, but that is almost beside the point: what matters is what its presence reveals.
