Arctic wide sea ice extent has been running near the lowest in the 48-year satellite record not only this spring but much of the time since mid-November (Fig. 1). Based on National Snow and Ice Data Center analysis, the October 2025 through May 2026 average daily sea ice extent was the lowest since 1978-79 (the start of the daily satellite estimates of sea ice extent).
