Since the start of 2026, multiple ocean temperature records have been broken off the California coast, where a persistent marine heatwave has taken hold since May 2025.
And recent observations show that the event is worsening as more and more 100-year-old temperature records at the surface and the bottom of the coastal waters shatter.
April 15th is just one of the more recent days to see record-breaking temperatures. The Scripps Pier, La Jolla, showed a temperature of 68.5 degrees at the surface on Wednesday, which tied the record for the hottest April 15th on record. This temperature is around 8 degrees above average for the station. The bottom temperature, though, broke the record at 67.6 degrees. Sea bottom records go back to 1927.
