Scientists Rule Out the Most Frightening Forecast: Why the Worst-Case Climate Future Has Just Been Dismissed | News World

The latest update to climate projections discards the worst-case scenario, but scientists also warn that staying below the 1.5°C threshold is becoming increasingly difficult.

For years, it was the scenario featured in the most alarming studies on climate change, one in which fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions continued to surge.

However, that future has now disappeared from the latest international climate projections. Scientists have decided to retire the well-known RCP8.5 scenario, along with its more recent counterpart, SSP5-8.5, from the next generation of climate models.

This decision has sparked intense debate, particularly in political circles, but experts insist that it does not mean climate change impacts are becoming less concerning, nor does it imply that previous projections were incorrect.
