The Leonid meteor shower returns this weekend. Although more faintly visible in the weeks before and after November 16th-17th, the shower will be at its most prominent that Sunday evening. An average of about 15 meteors per hour at a darker site can be expected for nighttime viewers, with the northern hemisphere generally better positioned for the show.
With the moon in a waxing crescent phase, visibility should not be hampered much by the glow of our natural satellite. Just after midnight on November 17th, the constellation Leo will rise from the east. The wee hours of the morning will offer the highest density of meteors entering our atmosphere, which will appear to move outwards in all directions from the titular constellation.
