From record heat to widespread chill, this weekend brings a major pattern shift. Temperatures will tumble well below average nationwide, with frost and freezes likely, while storms could turn strong across the Southeast.
Spring has already produced a pair of record-breaking heat waves, but this weekend will make weather headlines for how chilly it will be across a large swath of the country. Temperatures for much of the country will be around 5 to as much as 15 degrees below average or more Saturday morning.
Surges of relatively cold air will sweep southward around the backside of an upper-level low-pressure system moving slowly through eastern Canada into the central and eastern U.S This will be a major pattern shift compared to what dominated the weather earlier in spring.
