Unusual March Heat Accelerates Snowpack Melt
An early-season heat wave is pushing temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal across much of the western United States. In parts of California, Nevada, and Arizona, highs are climbing into the 90s and even low 100s, levels more typical of late spring or early summer.
Dozens of daily records are being challenged or broken as this prolonged warmth continues.
This type of heat in March is especially impactful because of what still remains in the mountains. The Sierra Nevada snowpack, which typically melts gradually through spring, is now beginning to melt earlier and faster than normal. Snowpack acts as a natural reservoir, releasing water slowly into rivers and reservoirs.
