WASHINGTON (TNND) — Apple announced on Monday that John Ternus will succeed Tim Cook as the company’s CEO on Sept. 1. Cook will assume the role of executive chairman.
Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, will join Apple’s board of directors once he is chief, and he will be the company’s eighth CEO.
Arthur Levinson, the company’s non-executive chairman, will become the lead independent director of Apple the same day.
“Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition,” Apple said in a press release.
This is the first CEO transition at Apple since Cook succeeded the late Steve Jobs in 2011.
