With the month of May winding to a close, the Desert Southwest is in the midst of peak pre-monsoon wildfire season. While a pattern shift favoring monsoon rains is appearing in longer-term outlooks, the near term continues a dry and hazardous pattern. Residents and visitors to Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado could be affected.

Building high pressure and a tightening pressure gradient will kick up southerly winds through much of the Colorado Plateau on Friday.
