Lose the sea ice, the thinking goes, and the ocean beneath it transforms almost overnight – with one set of creatures swapped for another as the white cover pulls back. The Arctic is sliding toward ice-free summers within decades, and that fast-flip picture is the one we carry.
A team in Norway held that picture against a real record from ocean DNA collected in mud on the floor of a cold northern sea. What the layers showed was not a fast flip at all.
