MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – As the unofficial start to the summer season gets underway, state tourism officials believe more people could be driving to visit the Green Mountains due to the high cost of jet fuel and air travel.
Most of Vermont’s summer tourism traffic comes from drivers about five hours away in the New York and Boston metro areas.
Vermont’s Chamber of Commerce says the last time fuel was over $4 a gallon, Vermont saw tourists making shorter family trips, trading the cross country trip for a ride on the road.
Amy Spear, Vermont Chamber of Commerce president, said there is uncertainty about the economic outlook.
