Lately, I’ve noticed a strange phenomenon in my writing. Whenever I write an em dash, like so—I pause. Does this smack of AI? Should I change it? Large language models famously overuse this particular punctuation, but I loved the em dash long before ChatGPT entered the conversation. Why should I have to give it up?
I’m not alone. Writers far and wide have contested this assault on a stylistic flourish that was unequivocally theirs first. After all, the reason it’s become a classic AI tell is because it’s widely used in the writing that it’s trained on. “In books, articles, essays, humans used them so often that AIs learned them as a default natural flow,” writes Brent Csutoras on Medium. Avoiding the em dash is “like asking a bird not to chirp.”
