Fueled by extreme drought and strong wind, wildfires in parts of southern Georgia and northeast Florida have burned more than 50 homes so far, prompting evacuations and a mandatory burn ban. Firefighters are battling to contain the fast-moving flames. Huge plumes of smoke from the wildfire are deteriorating air quality across the region.
More Than 50 Homes Burned in Georgia, with More Under Threat
Rapidly growing wildfires have already destroyed more than 50 homes in southeast Georgia with more in risk. Hundreds in areas under immediate threat have been forced to leave their homes as well. The two largest wildfires in Georgia have together burned more than 53 square miles so far. Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency for over 90 counties in South Georgia.
