PHOENIX (AZFamily) — When it comes to dating apps, you know you have to hand over a lot of personal information to find your match. You upload photos and share details about your life, and it’s all information you’ve agreed to put out there. However, a recent analysis of more than two dozen dating apps by Mozilla Privacy Not Included discovered that most of them, including Grindr, Hinge, and Tinder, collect more information than users may realize.
“They can collect extra information from your photos that you don’t know about like metadata or even use AI to scan your photos and learn even more things about you, and then they also share and sell that data,” said Zoe MacDonald from the Privacy Not Included team.
The group’s review also showed that most apps don’t meet minimum security standards, leaving them vulnerable to potential hacks. Out of 25 apps evaluated, 22 ended up with Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included warning label. Happn, eHarmony, and Lex did not receive a warning label.
To use dating apps, MacDonald suggests thinking of your dating profile more like your LinkedIn profile; assume anything you post will end up in the public domain. Users should avoid connecting social media accounts to dating apps. It’s also critical to check the app permissions…
